Growth mindset means taking risks

Having a growth mindset is something very much easier said than done. As someone who helps young therapists start and build their practice, I hear excuses for self sabotage all the time.

"I want to make sure I do it right" really means: I want to make sure I cover all my bases so there is zero chance that I feel like a failure.

"How do I make more money" really means: how can make more money without risking my time, effort, or stability?

"That's not the way I was told to do it" really means: are you sure this is a guarantee? I don't want to risk anything of substance."

These mindsets keep us in our comfort zones, but growth mindset means taking risks. We have to be willing to try new things, even if we might fail. That's how we learn and grow. And growth is essential for happiness- it's the feeling of progressing that makes us feel alive.

When we're stuck in a fixed mindset, we feel like we can't do anything wrong. We stagnate and stop learning. But growth means making mistakes, it means trying new things and sometimes failing. It's hard, but it's worth it.

Think about the last time you learned something new- what was your mindset? Were you willing to try different techniques even if you might not have succeeded? Or did you play it safe, sticking to what you know?
